Briefly: After so, so many years of development, with just about every director-star combo imaginable, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies finally has a set release date. Screen Gems will put the comedy horror mashup in theaters February 19, 2016, putting it up against the Naomi Watts thriller Shut In.
Based on the hit novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies moves the plot of Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice to an idyllic English countryside littered with the undead. Lily James, Bella Heathcote, Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, and Suki Waterhouse play the five Bennet sisters. Sam Riley, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston, and Matt Smith are their would-be suitors. Burr Steers directs.

Have you seen the Bennet sisters lately? It might be time to get reacquainted with Jane Austen’s most famous family. Elizabeth (Lily James), Lydia (Ellie Bamber), Mary (Millie Brady), Jane (Bella Heathcote), and Kitty (Suki Waterhouse) aren’t just eligible singles anymore; they’re sword- and knife-wielding martial artists.
With a zombie apocalypse that’s been raging for more than 70 years, they kind of have to be. Writer-director Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down) took on the adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s enormously popular book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies after years of development hell—David O. Russell had penned a draft and was attached to direct at one point—and rewrote the script with an eye toward realism. “The first thing I did was reinsert all the Pride and Prejudice beats,” says Steers, who also beefed up the roles of Darcy (Sam Riley) and Wickham (Jack Huston).
But it’s the spark-plug sisters who steal the show with their corset-bound roundhouse kicks. When it comes to her character, James doesn’t think that’s too much of a stretch. “Even in the original story, Elizabeth’s a fighter and beyond her contemporaries in her ambitions and her ideas of women,” she says. “She’s a badass warrior. She’s a ninja.” Filming began in late September; the action-adventure literary adaptation should hit the big screen next year.

You can’t keep a good zombie down. Ever since Seth Grahame-Smith’s goofy Jane Austen spoof Pride and Prejudice and Zombies became a surprise hit back in 2009, conversations about turning the Victorian horror-comedy into a movie have been taking place. Directors like Craig Gillespie and Mike White have come and gone, along with a slew of female stars like Blake Lively, Emma Stone and Lily Collins. The one constant throughout the film’s development has been its script, which David O. Russell penned back when he was set to direct. Today, however, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has finally firmed up.
Downton Abbey actress Lily James will lead the film, along with fellow Brit Sam Riley (Maleficent) and Australian actress Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows, In Time). James will portray Elizabeth Bennet, with Riley playing her suitor Darcy and Heathcote on board as one of the Bennet sisters (it’s not too much of a stretch to guess that she’s playing Jane, though that hasn’t yet been confirmed). Jack Huston is also in talks for a role, presumably that of Mr. Bingley.
Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down, Charlie St Cloud) is directing from Russell’s script, which Steers has rewritten since coming aboard. The movie is expected to maintain the story of Grahame-Smith’s novel, in which lovers from different social classes in 19th century England are faced with the challenge of an army of the “sorry stricken” – aka zombies.
The source material is a very funny read – to give you some insight into its approach to Austen’s novel, the Bennet sisters wield katanas and fend off an army of highly trained ninjas at one point – so it’s very exciting to see that a film adaptation is finally getting off the ground. Additionally, James, Riley and Heathcote are all very talented thesps, and their involvement has this project off to a promising start.
Principal photography is due to commence on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in September, with a release in 2015 tentatively planned.
